”After the Crisis? Theological Migration Ethics Today”

Crowds greet refugees with claps and cheers,” announced newspaper headlines after thousands of refugees arrived at Munich station in Germany in 2015. Ulrich Schmiedel takes the scene at the station as a point of departure to analyse and assess how churches in Germany have responded to the so-called migration crisis. He argues that the statements of the churches frame the arriving refugees either as migrants or as Muslims. These frames come with competing ethical consequences. Whereas migrants are presented as passive victims in need of some form of support by Christians, Muslims are presented as active victimisers in need of some form of suppression by Christians. However, when the then chairmen of the two mainline churches shook hands with the refugees arriving at Munich station, the surplus of meaning communicated in these handshakes demonstrated that the refugees cannot be reduced to their respective framing, thus resisting the construction of both the cosmopolitan migrant frame and the communitarian Muslim frame – a resistance which has crucial consequences for a theological ethics of migration today.

Ulrich Schmiedel is Lecturer in Theology, Politics and Ethics at the University of Edinburgh. The Deputy Director of Edinburgh’s Centre for Theology and Public Issues

The lecture will be followed by a Q&R.
