Authorizing Texts while Articulating Identity
Katja Kujanpää, Associate Professor and University Researcher at the University of Helsinki
Texts perceived as authoritative have long been used to define who “we” are and how “we” should act. This seminar explores how Paul, the author of the Epistle of Barnabas, and Justin Martyr construct the authority of Jewish scriptures when shaping early Christian identity. It highlights their creative strategies for dealing with passages that appear to challenge or undermine their arguments, revealing how such negotiations shaped emerging notions of community and belief.
