Open lecture – Paul Foster
In conjunction with Martin Landgren’s public defence, one lecture and one seminar (Authorizing Texts while Articulating Identity) will be held.
Matthew and the Gentiles
Paul Foster, Professor of New Testament at the University of Edinburgh
The lecture explores how Matthew’s Gospel understands τὰ ἔθνη (“the nations”) and their place in relation to the people of God. Over time, scholars have debated whether Matthew envisions a community of mainly Gentile disciples, a renewed group of Torah-observant Jews, or something else. By examining Matthew’s language and portrayal of non-Jewish characters, it is suggested that the Gospel presents an inclusive vision—uniting all who follow Jesus in the work of the kingdom.
