Master Program in International Relations and Ecumenism

The new M.Th. program in International Relations and Ecumenism, offered by the Stockholm School of Theology, aims at educating future professionals and scholars in the fields of international and inter-church relations.

Relations between various Christian communities constantly evolve. Old models of cooperation and conflict between churches decline, and new emerge instead. These processes depend on both theological and socio-political factors, such as equality, gender, and a sustainable environment. This M.Th. program develops the skills of analyzing and improving the models of relations between Christian communities, and external relations with society and other religions.

After graduation, the student will be qualified to deal with an array of issues related to international relations and ecumenism, including church diplomacy, religious politics and security. Students may work in the fields of ecumenical relations, foreign affairs, for non-governmental Christian organizations and international organizations. The program also provides a ground for further research at more advanced level.

Grades

To be eligible for the program, an applicant must either have a bachelor’s degree in theology/religious studies, comprising 180 ECTS credits, or a degree in another subject which includes Religious Studies or Theological courses worth at least 60 credits, including a thesis worth at least 15 credits. At least 15 credits should be in Eastern Christian studies or equivalent subject areas. Students with other relevant subjects or an equivalent foreign degree may be admitted based on individual assessment and examination.

Students may also be admitted to later parts of the program (61-120 ECTS credits) based on a special application, provided that the relevant prerequisites are met.

An applicant needs to submit a letter of motivation.

The entry requirement for studies is equivalent to the English 6 course at Swedish upper secondary school. Students from outside Sweden, or students who cannot verify, proficiency in English, are required to make an internationally recognized test, e. g. TOEFL IELTS or equivalent.
