Theology, Ecology and the Future

The ecological crisis calls for sustainable ways of thinking and doing theology. The field of ecotheology, for long a marginalized academic field, holds today a key position in theological debates worldwide. The course studies the roots of ecocritical perspectives within different theological traditions along with contemporary expressions thus providing the student a contextualization of ecotheology today and a possibility of positioning her/himself on that map. Ecotheological expressions relating to Christian eschatology, the Bible, apophatic theology, political theology, feminism, queer theory, economy, activism and ecumenism are introduced and discussed. The course thus introduces and critically analyses historical and contemporary theological suggestions of ways of living, believing and acting for a sustainable future.

Efter kursen förväntas studenten:

  • demonstrate in-depth knowledge of various ecotheological perspectives and the ways in which they relate to the theological traditions from which they have emerged
  • demonstrate an in-depth understanding of, and an ability to critically discuss, ecotheological challenges to economical systems, social and societal norms as well as to established theological thought figures
  • be able to argue critically and on a systematic theological basis for an ecotheological position in a contemporary political setting
