The course is a compulsory component of the M.A. Program in Human Rights and Democracy.

Course description
In this course, students will plan, author and defend Master Theses within independently chosen areas of inquiry of relevance to the study of human rights and democracy. The course consists of independent research and writing, as well as regular meetings with a designated supervisor and workshops with other students. The course ends with a thesis defence, where students critically assess the scholarly merits of each others work.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, the student shall be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
- demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the area for the Degree Project, as well as related areas of research on human rights and democracy,
Competence and skills
- skillfully and independently identify, formulate and address a qualified research problem within the field of inquiry and within the given time-frame,
- skillfully and independently choose and motivate a theoretical framework and method of analysis,
- collect, assess, analyze and interpret a relevant and sufficiently broad body of primary sources in a way that corresponds to scientific criteria,
- present an adequate research-design, results and conclusions in a well-structured, formally correct and clearly written thesis,
- orally present and defend the degree project, as well as to critically and constructively assess the work of one’s peers,
- account and argue for one’s assessment of complex phenomena—orally as well as in writing;
Judgement and approach
- reflect critically and independently on central theories and concepts within the field of inquiry;
- analyze and assess information using scientific criteria.

- För fullgjord kurs krävs minst 80% närvaro vid föreläsningar och 100% närvaro vid seminarier/gruppövningar och andra tillfällen för redovisning. Frånvaro därutöver kan kompenseras genom kompletteringsuppgift (-er) om kursansvarig lärare bedömer det möjligt. Vid frånvaro om 50 % eller mer betraktas kursen som avbruten, även om examinationsuppgifter har genomförts.
