Kurs

Iconology

This course focuses on the symbolic elements of traditional Orthodox icon painting by looking both at textual sources that explain their meaning and function and the ways in which they are visually articulated in different epochs. The analysis of both visual/artistic interpretations and textual sources will serve as the basis upon which theological interpretations behind the visual language of icons will be explored. This will give students the opportunity to relate theological issues related to the visual language of icons and icon symbolism with broader theological implications (e.g. eschatological).

Efter kursen förväntas studenten:

  • demonstrate in-depth knowledge of symbols used in Eastern icon-painting and the ability to analyze them
  • analyze and interpret visual elements of icon painting in their connection with textual sources
  • analyze and discuss visual elements, stylistic properties and symbolism used in icon painting, in their connection with Orthodox Christology, Soteriology and Eschatology
