Biblical Studies

In this course, the student learns to understand the basic history of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament as well as the interpretation of these texts in the Early Church. It conveys fundamental results and methods of modern exegesis, as well as Patristic Bible interpretations and perceptions of the Bible as they developed in early Christian times. Throughout the course, the students learn to apply different perspectives and methods to the biblical corpus, and to grasp basic distinctions between studying the text in its original context and the text as it functions within the larger framework of the Church in historic times.

At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

  • recall basic knowledge and critical awareness of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, their background and growth.
  • apply modern exegetical methods on biblical material
  • compare various approaches to the Scriptures in patristic times
  • evaluate the theological and ethical consequences of various interpretative traditions
