Eastern Christian Liturgics

This course provides students with an overview of the components of the Eastern Christian liturgical traditions in their diversity and commonality, a framework for understanding the historical development of Eastern Christian liturgical families, and an overview of the central elements of liturgical theology as articulated by Orthodox theologians today

At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

  • explain how contemporary scholarship understands the development of discrete liturgical traditions in the Eastern Churches,
  • name and identify major sources in the history of Eastern Christian liturgical traditions,
  • name and identify and the components and structures of Eastern Christian liturgies of the Eucharist and rites of initiation
  • summarize the relationships among liturgy, spirituality and sacramental theology in the Eastern Christian churches
  • describe  central concepts in contemporary Orthodox liturgical theologies
