The Ecumenical Summer Academy 2025

In the summer of 2025, The Ecumenical Academy at University College Stockholm gives the course

Ecumenical Peacebuilding in Times of War. The Legacy of Stockholm 1925

Welcome to this summer course, which is given in the Ecumenical Year of 2025. In Sweden, the Ecumenical Year is celebrated with a special view to the ecumenical world conference which took place in the Swedish capital Stockholm in 1925. In the troubled times of the inter-war period and in retrospect of the recent world war, the issue of peace was high on the conference agenda.

The ecumenical conference in Stockholm 1925 was a significant springboard for the development of the Life and Work movement, a movement fundamental to the World Council of Churches and a vital ecumenical current still today. In aspiration for gathering the churches’ voices for peace, the Stockholm conference infused energy into Christian peace engagement which has gained new vitality in our time. In the summer course, we study the events in 1925 with regard to the message of peace that emerged from the Stockholm conference. During the course we explore its meaning today, in a time which is once again characterized by international conflict, and in a church that is worldwide, multicultural, and embraces a multiplicity of traditions.

The course starts in June and ends in August. Classes will take place online in June and July. In August, students will have the opportunity to participate in and contribute to the jubilee program of the Ecumenical Week in Stockholm.

Teaching period: Week 25-34. Distance education and writing period in June and July. Submission of paper in August.
